Baby*Star's Story
Baby*Star was a rescued PMU foal. When I first got her she was a shy little 6 month old filly who wanted nothing to do with people. After siting by her and talking calmly to her she started to trust me more and more. Soon she would come right up to greet me and I would give her a treat. I would lead her around the barn, up and down the driveway and around the arena. Soon she learned to stay still on the cross ties and to load in a trailer. Now she's a beautiful filly with lots of spunk and potential to be a show jumper. She is starting training in the summer of 2005 but only basic trail riding. I may start her in jumping next year (2006) Above is a Picture of her |
PMU Horses & Foals
PMU or (Pregnant Mare Urine) horses are used in the premarin industry. When a mare is pregnant their urine is collected so premarin products can be made. About 60,000 mares are bred each year just for their urine! While pregnant, the mares are kept in a standing stall about 8ft by 3ft wide The foals, when they are born, are clubbed in the head to be killed or when they are 6 months old sent to slaughter! Thats aproximatly 60,000 foals each year going to slaughter houses! If a mare is unable to become pregnant any longer, they are too sent off to slaughter. Many farms have been rescuing PMU mares & foals so they can be adopted to a loving family. Before you go to a breeding farm to buy either a mare or foal, consider rescuing a PMU horse and give them that 2nd chance that they really do deserve! Here are a few sites about adopting PMU's (Just Copy and paste into the web adress box)http://www.pmufoaladoption.org/ http://www.mustangs4us.com/pmu_rescue_foals.htm |
Help To Prevent Slaughter!
Okay, So horse slaughter can not be totally prevented but you can help reduce the amount of horses being slaughtered. There are many ways to do this. first, you can donate to your local horse rescue farm. Lots of farms go to auctions to buy horses so they don't end up going to the meat men. Second, you can buy a horse from a rescue farm and give that horse lots of TLC. Buying a horse gives the rescue farm more money to buy & save more horses. Third, you could go to auctions yourself and buy a horse thats heading for slaughter. Lots of horses could be saved by doing one of the above options. Even if it's only one horse, it's still one life saved!
